1. Planting Romaine Lettuce:

In warm climates, consider planting during cooler months. Space plants 6 to 12 inches apart in rows 18 inches apart to allow for full development​​​​.

2. Soil Preparation:
Romaine lettuce grows best in well-drained, loose soil rich in organic matter. Amend soil with compost or manure, and ensure it has a pH of 6.2 to 6.8. For sandy or clay soils, add 2 to 4 inches of compost, working it in 6 inches deep​​​​.

3. Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular, light watering is crucial, as Romaine has a shallow root system. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Over or under-watering can lead to wilting or bitter leaves​​​​.

Romaine lettuce needs 3 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It can tolerate partial shade, especially in hot climates, to prevent bolting. It thrives in cooler weather but is somewhat heat-tolerant​​​​.

5. Fertilization:
Fertilize every two weeks with a balanced organic liquid fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 blend. Avoid high nitrogen levels to prevent bitterness​​. (These numbers represent the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the fertilizer, respectively. A 10-10-10 fertilizer contains equal parts of each nutrient. )


6. Pest and Disease Management:
Romaine lettuce is susceptible to pests like aphids and slugs. Regularly inspect plants and use organic pest control methods if necessary. Insect problems can be minimized with rabbit fences or row covers​​​​.

7. Harvesting:
Romaine lettuce typically matures in 60-75 days. Harvest leaves individually or cut the whole head at the base. Morning harvests yield the crispest leaves. After harvesting, wash and store the leaves in the refrigerator​​.

8. Continuous Harvest:
To ensure a steady supply, sow more seeds every two weeks in spring and early summer. Use cold-hardy varieties early in the season and heat-tolerant, bolt-resistant varieties as the weather warms​​.
